  • Ewa Wisnierska, the German Paragliders pilot who reached an altitude of 9947 metres and survived lightning, pounding hail, minus 40-degree temperatures and oxygen deprivation after a storm system sucked her to an altitude higher than Mount Everest as she prepared for the World Paragliding Championships in Manilla, Northern New South Wales..Ewa Wisnierska, 35, passed out due to a lack of oxygen and flew unconscious for up to an hour covered in ice after reaching an altitude of 9947 metres - near the cruising height of a jumbo jet. Her top speed of ascent was clocked at 20 metres per second and her descent at 33 metres per second by an on-board tracking system. The previous altitude survival record for a paraglider was 24,000 feet..Chinese pilot He Zhongpin, 42, was not so lucky, he was found 75 kilometres away from his launch site, and most likely suffocated or froze to death after being sucked into the storm..Ewa Wisnierska went on to compete in the Paragliding World Championships which took place between 24th February and 9th March 2007 where she finished 10th in the female division of the competition.....

  • Sunset at Wharariki Beach and Archway Islands, Golden Bay, situated just west of Cape Farewell and Farewell Spit at the northern most point of the South Island of New Zealand..Wharariki beach is approximately an hour's drive from Takaka, and is accessible by a 20 minute stroll across private, rolling farmland..The remote beach is characterised by bold cliff lines, high arches, caves, sand dunes and is home to fur-seals and seabirds. The wind sweeping the western coast has resulted in quirky, intriguing bushland. Wharariki Beach, South Island, New Zealand. 7th February 2011. Photo Tim Clayton..

  • Kayaking on the Whanganui National Park, North Island..This park encloses the wild upper and middle reaches of the Whanganui River, which is New Zealand's longest navigable waterway. Beginning beneath the shadow of the central plateau's giant volcanoes, the 329 kilometre river winds its way to the Tasman Sea through an endless procession of forested valleys and hills...The river was once an important transport route for Maori, and many defensive pa (forts) were constructed on headlands along its sinuous course. Early European settlers and traders also used the river for transport, guiding their shallow-draft boats through the long narrow gorges that today provide so much enjoyment for kayakers. The paddling adventure that begins in Taumarunui and finishes in Pipiriki is known as the 'Whanganui Journey'.with Coastal Kayakers. Whanganui National Park, North Island.
