  • A decade ago Vietnams roads were teaming with bicycles. But as the countries economic growth increased bringing relative affluence to the working class, the push bike has been replaced by the scooter as the main mode of transport for the nations population.. Ho Chi Minh City alone has an estimated three million scooters buzzing around the streets day and night. Everyday life is dominated by the site of the scooter. Street corners have become parking lots for rows upon rows of parked scooters.. Puncture repair workmen wait on every city street to come to the aid of the rider with a blown tyre, and make a quick buck in the process, while families have a night on the town together, all seated on the same scooter!.Any number of items can be seen transported on the back of a scooter, from pigs to wardrobes anything that can be tied down is moved on the trusted scooter..Even in the outlying country areas the scooter is now used to transport produce to and from the markets. While even beach goers at the coastal towns head for a swim and a sunbathe accompanied by their scooter. .A night on the town for a family in Ho Chi Minh City on September 29, 2006. Photo Tim Clayton
